“You know what? I might be the only player who brings fear to the fans without throwing a pitch,” Martinez said during the Phillies‘ media session. “It feels great to have the opportunity to be the player that catches the most attention ever – between the fans, the people in New York, at the Stadium.”
Pedro from 6 years ago might have invoked fear into the Yankees, but I have my doubts about this current version. No one can deny that Martinez has been better than expected this year bordering on great at times, including seven shutout innings in the NLCS against the Dodgers. However, Martinez is not that same over-powering pitcher from his Red Sox days.
There’s a chance that this could blowup in the Phillies’ face, but if Pedro gets off to a good start it might invoke those memories of 2004 for the Yankees.
Decision: Smart (maybe)
