Phil Mickelson Explains How To Hit A Golf Ball Off The Cart Path

Do you love or hate the fact that Phil Mickelson can hit off a cart path with ease?  During the first round of the WGC – Cadillac Championship at Doral, Mickelson’s monstrous 450 yard drive on the 17th hole ended up pin-high.  Except it was about thirty yards to the right, resting on the cart path.  Most golfers would take a drop at the nearest relief area.  Not Phil.  Mickelson thought this cart path shot would be easier and give him a better chance at a birdie.  He was right.  He landed this amazing chip shot just feet from the hole for an eventually tap-in for birdie.

Mickelson ended the day with a bogey-free round of 67 and is in the hunt for the championship.

After the round, Mickelson was asked by a reporter to explain how he hit this shot.  The video is just priceless and sums up why people love or hate Phil.

“This is actually a very easy shot here,” Mickelson starts and proceeds to go into detail how you would have to be an “idiot” to open the club face.  The reporter giggled after the full explanation, “do you really, honestly think an amateur can hit that shot?”  Mickelson’s response, “well now that they know how to do it, absolutely.”

Sounds easy Phil, can’t wait to break my pitching wedge the next time I try.

Mickelson has had an open and down year thus far in 2013.  He won the Waste Management Phoenix Open back in the beginning of February but has had no other Top 10 finishes this year.  With The Masters just a few weeks away, I imagine Phil would love to gett back into championship form this weekend.
